Central nuclear de Monticello

The Monticello nuclear power plant is an electricity generating facility located in Monticello, Minnesota on the banks of the Mississippi River. The site, which began operating in 1970, has a single BWR) of General Electric design BWR-3 that generates 553 megawatts. It is owned by the Northern States Power Company (NSP), today a subsidiary of Xcel Energy, and is run by the Nuclear Management Company (NMC).

On November 9, 1971, a plant water storage facility overflowed, releasing 190 m³ of radioactive waste water in the Mississippi. Subsequently, some radioactive substances entered the St. Paul water system.

The reactor is currently authorized to operate until 2010, despite the fact that Xcel has requested an extension. It is also likely that, in the next few years, the facility will start storing its nuclear waste in dry steel hulls on the site itself, as it has been doing since the 1990s, downstream, the Prairie Island nuclear power plant. < / p>
