Edgard Poelmans


Edgard Poelmans Georgius Edgard Poelmans (July 13, 1883 in Mechelen - December 14, 1932 in Vorst) was a Belgian football player who played as a defender. He played in First Class at Union Sint-Gillis and played 16 matches with the Belgian football team and scored one goal. Career

Mechelaar Poelmans, who played in Brussels with his brother Victor because there was no football club in Mechelen, debuted in the first team of Athletic and Running Club de Bruxelles in 1899 and transferred to Olympia CB after three seasons and promoted in 1903 with the team to first class. Just before the start of the first league championship, he stepped over to Union Sint-Gillis, the team against which Olympia had to play.

Union was at that moment the absolute top team of Belgium and Poelmans immediately acquired a permanent base. With the team, which over time he also became a leader, Poelmans became seven-time international champion (1904, 1905, 1906, 1907, 1909, 1910 and 1913) and twice the second (1908 and 1912). In 1913 and 1914, Poelmans with Union also won the Cup of Belgium. In 1914 Poelmans put a point behind his players career. He played 203 matches for Union and scored 29 goals.

Between 1904 and 1911, Poelmans played 16 matches with the Belgian football team and scored one goal in 1909 in the friendly match against the Netherlands. From the very first match of the national team, Poelmans had a permanent base. In 1921 he became a trainer at Stade Louvaniste and at the age of 49 he suddenly died in the Brussels Forest but how or why is not known yet.
