Living Library

Biblioteca Viva is the first public library inside a shopping center in Chile, and in turn, in Latin America. With the support of Mall Plaza and La Fuente Foundation, it designs, implements and manages eleven libraries throughout the country, in the communes of Antofagasta, La Serena, Huechuraba, Cerrillos, La Florida, Puente Alto, Central Station, San Bernardo , Talcahuano, Los Angeles and Biobío.

Biblioteca Viva provides access to reading materials, films, cultural expressions and spaces open to the community; approaches reading and culture to areas that lack adequate spaces for their development.

History

Biblioteca Viva was born in January 2003 with the inauguration of the first headquarters at Mall Plaza Vespucio in Santiago de Chile. It is founded and managed by Fundación La Fuente and financed under Law 18,905 of cultural donations by the same chain of Mall Plaza shopping centers.

Both Biblioteca Viva and La Fuente Foundation use the benefits of Law 18,905 of cultural donations, known as Ley Valdés, which allows private contributions to be derived in cultural terms, subject to prior state approval. From its beginnings, Mall Plaza - in addition to the physical space that it provides on loan - solves the technical requirements that relate to the conditioning of the establishment, while Fundación La Fuente is dedicated to designing and managing the project.

This is a non-profit project, but aims at self-sustainability, thanks to the income of partners and Internet service. In addition, Fundación La Fuente seeks auspices from outside companies to support the operation of each branch. Cultural Extension

Biblioteca Viva offers free cultural activities to its visitors and partners, which are scheduled monthly. These can be as follows: Libraries
