New Santander

New Santander (Spanish: Nuevo Santander) was a province of the Spanish sub-kingdom of New Spain. New Santander was located in the northeast of present Mexico and roughly covered the current state of Tamaulipas and parts of Texas. The capital was Santa María de Aguayo.

The province was founded in 1746 by José de Escandón, who called it to his birthplace Santander. From 1777, New Santander became part of the Eastern Group of the Internal Provinces, the military border area of the Spanish colony. In 1824, after the proclamation of the republic in Mexico, New Santander was renamed Tamaulipas and became a state of Mexico.
