Gwenllian, daughter of Llywelyn

Gwenllian ferch Llywelyn ('Gwenllian daughter of Llywelyn', June 1282 - Sempringham at Bourne, June 7, 1337) was the daughter of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, the last prince of an independent Wales. After the death of Llywelyn, just half a year after her birth, and the conquest of Wales, the surviving progeny of the ruling prince was not immediately killed but imprisoned. Princess Gwenllian received from King Eduard I of England a relatively generous annuity of twenty pounds and was transferred to the remote Gilbert line monastery in the East English hamlet of Sempringham, where she died almost fifty five years later.

Although Gwenllian's life is historically documented, many legends came across her so that she became a symbol of the pursuit of an independent Wales. Until today, the lost princess continued to speak to the imagination. For example, a foundation named for her knew in September 2009 that a 926 meter high mountain peak in Snowdonia was renamed from Carnedd Uchaf to Carnedd Gwenllian.
