Murethach of Auxerre (also Muridac or Muiredach) was an Irish grammarist who lived in the ninth century.

Lifecycle

He was at the head of the newly established Karolingian abbey school of the Auxerre Abbey of Saint-Germain from 835, where he lectured in grammar. One of his students was Haymo van Auxerre. Murethach laid the foundation for the fame of Auxerre's school.

Between 840 and 845, he moved from Auxerre to Metz, where he was part of the entourage of Archbishop Drogo van Metz, an illegitimate son of Charles the Great.

Murethach is known as the author of a comment on Don Pedro's Ars Major.

A large number of his manuscripts have been preserved. Dated in the 9th and 10th centuries, they come from Champagne, Lorraine, Limousin and the Loire and Seine valleys. Working Literature Externe link
