The shield of Grado is surrounded by controversy. There are three versions, none legally sanctioned. The first and oldest is the one that has represented the council for the most years. It is in disuse and the inhabitants of the council do not recognize it. This is the design invented by Octavio Bellmunt and Fermín Canella to illustrate the chapter on Degree of his encyclopedia "Asturias". Shield of Degree used by the City council. Shield of Degree

The right shield is the heraldically correct version of the one used by the town hall today. It is an illustration of Eduardo Panizo Gómez, included in his book "Institutional Heraldry and Vexilology of the Principality of Asturias" published in 1994 by the government of the Principality of Asturias. These are the arms of the family Grado: A pine, of its color, in field of gules. Around its trunk, a snake, sinople, with the head on the right side of the shield. On the sinister side of it, a raven, of saber, perched on a branch of the pine. On the whole, four spears of gold, with their silver irons, in bar situation. Lettered by a helm of a gentleman.

In the version used by the city council of the same coat of arms (in the left part of the document), since the 90s, heraldic norms have been violated, which prohibit color on color.

A peculiarity of the coat of arms of Grado, which differentiates it from many others of the Kingdom of Spain, is that it is not marked with a crown, but with a helmet of a hidalgo.
