The slave

Lo Schiavo is a serious opera in four acts with music by Antônio Carlos Gomes and libretto in Italian by Rodolfo Paravicini, based on a theatrical play by Viscount of Taunay. It premiered in the Imperial Theater Dom Pedro II, Rio de Janeiro on September 27, 1889.

The opera deals with the issue of slavery, a major concern in Brazil at that time (the institution had only been abolished by the Golden Law in 1888). As Béhague explains, "Lo schiavo is considered in Brazil as the best of Gomes operas, reflecting a national theme that required, and obtained, a new treatment."

In the statistics of Operabase appears with only one representation in the period 2005-2010.
