Joannes Diderik Dibbits

Joannes Diderik Dibbits (Assen, May 9, 1829 - Bloemendaal, June 22, 1895) was a Dutch lawyer and mayor. Life and work

Dibbets was a son of pharmacist Willem Abraham Dibbets and Adriana Suzanna Berchuijs. He was a lawyer at the provincial court in Assen. In 1856 he succeeded his father-in-law Jan Alingh as mayor of Borger. His father-in-law was, in the opinion of the then Commissioner of the King of Drenthe, too old and unable to fulfill his duties properly. He would not always choose and act closely as soon as his own interests were at stake. Dibbits surpassed his father in law regarding the duration of his mayorhood. His father-in-law had been 36 Mayor of Borger. Dibbits would fulfill this function for 38 years until he was granted an honorable resignation on November 1, 1894. Until 1893 he also fulfilled the position of municipal secretary. In 1895, the year after the end of his mayor, he died. He was succeeded by Borger's former municipal recipient, Synco Reijnders.

Dibbits developed a lot of interest in the archaeological finds in his municipality during his mayor of Borger. He regularly mediated on disposal of the Provincial Museum of Asses and the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden. He was the chairman of the Local Department of Society for the Utility of the General. On December 1, 1863, he was appointed as a school supervisor in addition to his mayor.

On April 29, 1856, Dibbits married Borger with Jantien Alingh, daughter of the farmer and mayor of Borger Jan Alingh and Anna Boelken.
