Mitrobates

Mitrobates (Μιτροβάτης) was a satrap of the Helespónica Frigia (Dascilio) towards 525 a.C.

Mitrobates is known for a passage from the Histories of Herodotus in which he confronts Oretes, satrap of Sardis, for not having occupied the island of Samos, close to his satrapy and "so easy to subdue, that one of his natives (Polycrates) revolted with fifteen hoplites, he took power from her and is now his tyrant. "

During the convulsive period following the death of Cambyses II and the usurpation of the Persian throne by Esmerdis, Oretes was able to take revenge for the words of Mitrobates, assassinating him with his son Cranaspes around 520 a.C.
