Shield of Cuenca

For the shield of the homonymous Ecuadorian city, see Escudo de Cuenca (Ecuador). Shield of the city of Cuenca, version with royal crown closed.

The coat of Cuenca has the following heraldic description:

In a field of gules (red), a golden chalice summed with an eight-pointed silver star.

The ancient royal crown ring, open, composed of a circle of gold set with precious stones holding eight, visible five florets, interpolated of pearls.

The shield alludes to the reconquest of the city by Alfonso VIII in 1177, the star symbolizes the beginning of the siege that took place on January 6, the day of the Epiphany, and the chalice of St. Matthew Evangelist taking of the city that took place the 21 of September, day in which the celebration of this saint is celebrated.

At present, the city council uses a stylized version of the traditional shield, probably distant from traditional heraldic conventions. Current official shield version
