The Mayflower House Museum
The Mayflower Society, full of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, is an organization of Americans descended from the Pilgrim Fathers who left the Mayflower ship to the New World in 1620. Members must be able to document that they originate from one of the passengers of the first Mayflower crossing. A primary purpose of the organization is to make known the role played by the Pilgrims in the history of the United States.
The company was established in 1897 in Plymouth (Massachusetts), the place where the Pilgrims settled after their Plymouth Colony. There are divisions of the company in all 50 US states and the capital Washington, D.C. Also in Canada there is a department.
In 1941, the organization bought a villa in Plymouth, the Edward Winslow House, as its headquarters. This house from 1754 was built on behalf of a descendant of Pilgrim's leader Edward Winslow. Today, the company's office and library are located in an adjacent building and serves as a museum, the Mayflower House Museum.
