A batea is a vessel in the form of a trough, used in ports and arsenals, or a wooden platform that is placed in the sea for the breeding or cultivation of mussels and other molluscs. Both meanings are contemplated by the Spanish Royal Academy. mitilicultura

The molluscs that are desired grow: mussels or oysters, but also numerous fish and other types of molluscs, as well as a multitude of algae that adhere to the ropes. In this way we have that, over time, a batea ends up being a very rich ecosystem. In Spain they are mainly in the Rías Bajas, in Galicia.
