Galician Regionalist Association

The Galician Regionalist Association (ARG) was a regionalist political organization active in Galicia between 1890 and 1892.

In November 1890 the Regional Regionalist Committee presided over by Manuel Murguía was constituted in Santiago de Compostela, although the majority of its members came from traditionalism. Among them were Alfredo Brañas, Salvador Cabeza de León, José Tarrío, Juan Barcia Caballero and Jesús Fernández Suárez. In 1891, local committees were formed, under the name of Regional Galician Association, in Lugo, La Coruña, Orense, Pontevedra and Tuy . In total it did not reach much more than 50 associates, although in the municipal elections of Santiago, Jose Tarrío left chosen councilman.

The Galician Patria (1891-1892) was its official organ, directed by Murguía, and in which Brañas wrote important articles for the later evolution of regionalism. Among the actions of the ARG, the organization of the Floral Games of Tuy in 1891, in which Brañas and Murguía used Galician for the first time in a public event.

The differences between traditionalists and liberals prevented the consolidation of the organization, although it was a very important step in the formation of a Galician nationalist sentiment, being the first regionalist political organization that existed in Galicia.
