Hihat

Hihat

The hihat (Dutch pronunciation: [ɦɑjɦɛt], English pronunciation: [haɪhæt]) is part of a drum set. It consists of a standard on which two basins are mounted (usually with a diameter of 14 inches). The upper pelvis is connected to a pedal. As a result, it can be clamped on the other pelvis or moved upwards. This causes different sounds depending on the height when the cymbals are open, and how fast the closure occurs between the cymbals. If you still play with a stick or brushes, there are many more sounds possible. In the right-handed drummers the hihat is usually left-handed. The hihat is usually used to indicate the rhythm.

The hihat is also referred to as its precursor, the charleston mechanics, shortly charleston or charly.
