Joaquín Fonseca


Fray Joaquín Fonseca (Aramil, Siero, Asturias, November 10, 1822, Ávila, January 18, 1890), was an Asturian religious belonging to the Order of Preachers. Biography

At the age of 18, he entered the Dominican Missionary School of Asia in Ocaña, Toledo, where he made his novitiate, professing on December 6, 1841. The following year he went to the Philippines, completing his studies at the Universidad Santo Tomás de Manila. He was ordained a priest in December 1844 and graduated in theology in 1847, beginning that same year the teaching of philosophy, work he did until 1851, year of which he graduated in theology, taking charge of the chair until 1870.

He returned to Spain in 1874, being named regent of studies and professor of theology at the Colegio de Ocaña, a task he also carried out in the convent of Santo Tomás de Ávila.

He returned to Manila in 1878, occupying the position of Rector and Chancellor of Santo Tomás University until 1880, the year in which he returns to Spain. In the final years of his life he returned to Ávila again, until on January 18, 1980, a pneumonia ended his life at 68 years of age.

As a writer he brought to light a large number of titles in theology, philosophy, poetry and history.
