Simón de Kéza


Simón de Kéza (in Hungarian: Kézai Simon) was the most famous Hungarian chronicler of the thirteenth century. He was a priest at the royal court of Ladislaus IV of Hungary.

His most important work is the Gesta Hunnorum et Hungarorum, written in Latin around 1282, which gives a vivid description of the history of the Huns and Hungarians (considered relatives), from their legendary beginnings to the period contemporary. As the king's personal secretary, he worked on the royal archives, collecting his material from the earliest surviving chronicles there.

The chronicle was first published in a printing press in 1782, in Vienna. In the 19th century it was translated into Hungarian and became a popular reading that helped the development of national consciousness. and
