Zhiyi

Zhiyi

Zhiyi or Chih-i (538, Hunan - 597, Zhejiang) was a Chinese Buddhist monk who founded the eclectic Tiantai Buddhist School.

Orphaned at the age of 17, he studied with the Buddhist teacher Huisi for seven years. It was related to the imperial governments of the Chen dynasty of southern China and the Sui dynasty, which reunified the country. He reconciled the various tendencies of Buddhism by considering all doctrines as true and present in the mind of the enlightened Buddha. Zhiyi considered the Lotus Sutra as the main teaching and helped to establish it as the most popular sacred script in East Asia.
