Argentine-Chilean Friendship Day

The embrace of Maipú between the heroes of independence José de San Martín and Bernardo O'Higgins after his triumph at the Battle of Maipú.

The Argentinian-Chilean Friendship Day is a binational commemoration celebrated in Argentina and Chile after an agreement made in 2005 between both nations, by the presidents Néstor Kirchner and Ricardo Lagos. It is celebrated on April 5, with various cultural activities during the first week of the month. This date commemorates the historic embrace of the liberators José de San Martín and Bernardo O'Higgins at the Battle of Maipú.

The signed document emphasizes that the date will be commemorated in the educational institutes of Argentina and Chile, and also indicates that the governments of both countries will coordinate the creation of a prize of arts and culture that will be delivered every April 5 from the year 2006.

A year before, in turn, the Senate of the Chilean government asked to declare November 29 as "Day of Friendship and Peace between Chilean and Argentinean brothers." Sources
