Drabble

A drabble is a literary work of extremely short fiction, of exactly 100 words, although it is usually accepted as drabble any short story of less than 500 words. The goal of a drabble is brevity and to test the author's ability to express interesting ideas in a very scarce space.

In the drabbles competitions participants are given a subject and a certain amount of time to write a drabble. These contests are very popular in fanfiction communities.

It is said that the concept of drabble originated among UK sci-fi fans in the 1980s; and that the 100-word format was established by the Birmingham University SF Society. The name of drabble comes from the Big Red Book of Monty Python. It was a play on words, in which the first participant who wrote a novel won.

The language in which a drabble is written greatly influences the difficulty in creating it. For example, the phrase "Heittäytyisinköhän seikkailuun?" in Finnish means "What would happen if I launched into the adventure?" In Spanish eight words are used, while in Finnish, two. This makes writing a drabble in Finnish easier than in Spanish or English.
