During the first months of the war he was in charge of several columns and in December 1936 he was put in charge of the new 38th Mixed Brigade, which covered the Pozuelo sector. Captured by the Francoists, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison but managed to escape from prison in 1942 thanks to the support of right-wing friends.
