It usually involves larger amounts (greater than € 10,000) and thus a wealthy donor, which usually does not harm his own quality of life by donating. You only speak of a patronage if no personal interests are served, so a patronage is not a sponsor, except perhaps the recognition you can get at donation.
For a university or academic institution, monetary income differs from different types of government and government revenue. But also from income from industry that supports scientific research to benefit later, which also occurs.
It is therefore income from generous donations, the specific destination of which is sometimes determined by the donor (for example, money for breast cancer research), but sometimes not. In that case, the university itself decides what kind of research the money is going to be. The allocation of such income to certain researchers usually takes place after consultation of independent experts who judge whether the money is being spent well.
For artists, mecenary income differs from customer income and government support (grants). A patronage does not pay the artist to get a work of art back to him, but to provide him or her with living or to bear the cost of material, an exhibition or performance.
There is also a difference with income from legends, with the donation being completed only at the time of donation.
