Alfonso de Tous, president of the Generalitat of Catalonia in the period 1396-1413 in substitution of Miguel de Sanjuan who had to be absent from Catalonia in 1396 to go to an embassy before the king and did not return to reside in the principality. < / p>

He began his career in the seo of Tortosa, where he was rector of the church of San Mateo. He was at the service of Pope Benedict XIII of Avignon being his ambassador to Castile. He held the position of rector of the church of Santa María del Pino in Barcelona, ​​when he was appointed deputy to Cortes. Later, he got a canongia in the Cathedral of Barcelona and was auditor of the Pia Almoina. In 1408 king Martín el Humano proposed him as the new bishop of Barcelona, ​​but the Pope appointed Francisco de Blanes. Subsequently, under pressure from the same king, access to the bishopric of Elna (in Cerdanya, near Perpignan). In 1410, he was transferred to the Headquarters of Vich where, in 1417, he ordered that all parishes keep a register of baptisms.

During the Schism of the West, it is placed next to the Pope Benedict XIII until the Council of Constanza (1413), moment in which Fernando de Antequera withdrew his support to the Pope of Avignon. Alfonso de Tous tries to convince Benedict XIII to resign, but without success.

Of his activity in the post of ecclesiastical deputy of the Diputación del General it is noteworthy that he took part in the negotiations to deal with the succession of Martín el Humano, of whom he had been a counselor. Once crowned Fernando de Antequera, presided over the Courts of Montblanc of 1414. Both in these courts and in those of Sant Cugat of 1419, will try to influence, with little success, the behavior of the new King Trastamara to follow the line of action of his predecessors.

On December 3, 1400 Alfonso de Tous bought the Palace of the Generalitat of Catalonia for 38,500 salaries, giving it the institutional character of the Generalitat's headquarters and being the first president to inhabit it.
