La Chontalpa is one of the five subregions (La Chontalpa, the Center, the Sierra, the Rivers and the Pantanos) productive in which the Mexican state of Tabasco is divided, its name derives from the Chontal ethnic group of Tabasco, because to which it sits in the area.

This subregion is located within the hydrographic region of the Grijalva River; to which the Center and the Sierra also belong. Its surface is of 7 606.09 km², which represents 31.08% of the total of the state; and its population, according to INEGI figures, was 714,613 inhabitants in 2000, that is, 37.82% of the total population of the entity.

It is formed by five municipalities, the most western of the state: Cárdenas, Comalcalco, Cunduacán, Huimanguillo and Paraíso; although in some texts, where the former division of the state is still considered in four subregions (there was no Pantanos subregion), the municipalities of Nacajuca and Jalpa de Méndez, which are considered to belong to the subregion of the Center, are included.
