Japanese Industrial Standard

Symbol of Japanese Industrial Standard, introduced in 2005

Japanese Industrial Standard, abbreviated with JIS, is the designation of the Japanese Industrial Standards for the standards they set. Mostly applicable in construction and metal constructions, but also for countless other industrial applications. The European equivalent of JIS is European Standard (EN).

In 1949, the JIS standards began to act as counterparts to US ISO. In 1991, the ISO 9000 standards were taken over by JIS. The JIS standards are stricter and are therefore practically only followed in Japan, in practice, they are closer to ISO 9001 than to the 9000 standard.

An example is the table for determining the degree of watertightness of electrical appliances.

This table also indicates the corresponding designation for the European equivalent as determined by the IEC, the X hereby provides protection against touch and penetrating objects. Also see
