Sun Guoting

Part of the Calligraphy Treaty

Sun Guoting (simplified Chinese: chino 过 庭; traditional Chinese: 孫 過 庭) or Sun Qianli (孫 虔 禮), was a Chinese calligrapher of the Tang dynasty, remembered for his cursive calligraphy and his Calligraphy Treaty (書 譜) (ca. 687). The work was the first important theoretical work in Chinese calligraphy, and has remained important ever since, although only its prologue survived. The prologue is the only surviving calligraphic work by Sun, therefore he is responsible for the reputation of both Sun as an artist and as a theoretician. The original scroll can be seen in the National Palace Museum, in Taipei, Taiwan, and on its website. Notes
