Central nuclear de Shippingport

Shippingport's reactor was the first full-scale nuclear power plant in the United States.

The Shippingport Nuclear Power Plant is located on the Ohio River in Beaver County, Pennsylvania about 40 km from Pittsburgh. It began operating on December 2, 1957, and was in operation until October 1982.

The first stone was laid in 1954 at a ceremony attended by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who also inaugurated it on May 26, 1958 as part of his Atoms for Peace program. The plant was built in 32 months at a cost of $ 72.5 million. [1].

This was a pressurized water reactor with an output power of 60 MWe. Specifically, it was a Pressurized Light Water Reactor (PLWBR) designed to operate with 93% enriched uranium (normal reactors do not use more than 5% enrichment in any fuel rod). The reactor had initially been designed for a large aircraft carrier, and was adapted for commercial use.

The site has been fully cleaned and delivered for use without limitations.
