Cornelis Veening

Cornelis Veening (Groningen, 1885 - Sils im Engadin, Switzerland, 1974) was a depth psychologist and respiratory therapist.

Cornelis Veening has become famous for his research and teaching in the field of breathing technology. Veening is strongly influenced by his philosophies of depth psychology and body-directed psychotherapy. His breath therapy addresses the development of the body and the mind as a way from the inside out, whereby "man becomes what he wants."

Originally Veening studied vocals, but for health reasons he came to Berlin in the thirties of the 20th century. Here he learned to know Richard Heyer, a student of Carl Gustav Jung. This encounter was the beginning of his research in the field of breathing.

Cornelis Veening has not published his research on the Inner Breath, writing many of his findings. For him it was important not to separate the breath from the moment of perception. He said: "When the breath is on it is clear." Much of his legacy therefore comes from oral transitions and a few commentaries from 1947.

In the last years of his life he taught in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Crete. He died in Sils Maria in February 1974.
