Genoveva from Brabant is said to have been the wife of Siegfried of Trier, and was falsely accused by the butler Golo. Condemned to death, she was pardoned by her executioners, and lived for six years with her son in a cave in the Ardennes fed by a deer. Siegfried, who in the meantime had discovered Golo's betrayal, was pursuing the roe, when he discovered her in her hiding place and restored her to his former dignity.
