Manuel Guzmán García


Manuel Guzmán García (Rentería, 1878 - Campo de la Rata, La Coruña, August 31, 1936) was a Spanish Republican politician.

He worked as a carabinero for 12 years and then dedicated himself to the trade. Encouraged by his friend Santiago Casares Quiroga, he joined the Republican Left and was elected deputy to the Congress for the province of La Coruña in the general elections of 1936. The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War surprised him in La Coruña, where he was arrested on the 27th. of July. He was tried in a summary war council on August 26 and 27 together with the mayor of La Coruña, Alfredo Suárez Ferrín, the secretary of the city council, Joaquín Martín Martínez, the secretary of civil government, Leovigildo Taboada, the socialist leaders Ramón Maseda and Francisco Mazariegos and four other Coruñeses, all of them accused of military rebellion. He was sentenced to death together with the mayor, the municipal official and his friend, Francisco Prego, secretary Joaquín Martín, and the leaders of the PSOE, Maseda and Mazariegos, being executed in the Campo de la Rat together with them.
