Michaël V Kalaphates

Michaël V Kalaphates, literally the breewer (Greek: Μιχαήλ Ε Καλαφάτης, Mikhaēl V Kalaphatēs) (about 1015? - 1042) was Emperor of Byzantium from 1041 to 1042. His nickname was thanks to his father Stephanos, who initially ships bowed, but later became patronage of his influential brother John Admiral of the Navy.

He was the son of a emperor Michaels IV sister; However, the actual author of the Byzantine Empire was his uncle, the eunuch and minister of Orphanotrophos, who had taken his family from Paphlagon farmers to Constantinople to make them in his wake careers career. Kalaphates was adopted by the Emperor and his wife Zoë, just before Michael IV died in December 1041. Thus, Michael V could be crowned Emperor.

Because he would like to be the boss himself, the young emperor immediately sent his uncle, John's minister, to a monastery. In April 1042, Michaël V also sent Zoë and her sister Theodora to a monastery, but because Constantinople regarded him as a parvenu (descended from a low-born family from a backward area), the city remained in the hands of the ancient Empress. There were riots around the palace, and Michaël was forced within a few days to recall the purple-born aunts. Their revenge was sweet: Michaël V was ejected and castrated and in turn he was transferred to a monastery, where he died later that year. Zoë and her sister Theodora III came together on the throne.
