Red Jacket

Red Jacket

Red Jacket (New York, 1758-1830) is the name given to the Seneca speaker by the British, Sagoyewatha, "who keeps them awake." In 1792 he marched to Washington to negotiate the Independence of the Six Nations, just as he did in 1794 at Buffalo Creek, and would stand out by the power of his oratory. In 1805 he would criticize the hypocritical attitude of the Christian missionaries and their attitude in the sale of alcohol to the Indians. The last years of his life would be spent leading a faction facing both Joseph Brant and Cornplanter, since he never accepted the teachings of Handsome Lake.
