Spindling

In computing is known as spindling the distribution among several hard disks of different related files; for example, the files in a database. This reduces resource contention on disk access, improving performance.

The term comes from the word spindle, used in English to refer to the axis on which the plates forming a hard disk are mounted. The division of data between different devices so that they can work concurrently and thus increase the performance is also used in the known technique like Data striping, used for example in several levels of RAID; however, spindling always distributes whole files, whereas in data striping files are physically divided.
