Carlos de Lalaing


Charles I of Lalaing or Charles of Lalaing (1466-1525), Baron of Lalaing and first Count of Lalaing, title granted in 1522 by the emperor Carlos V (Carlos I of Spain). Son of Josse de Lalaing (1437-1483) and Bonne de Vievfille. In addition it was Baron of Escornaix, Lord of Montigny, Hantes, Brecle, Lord of Oudenaarde, etc., Chamberlain of the emperor Carlos V (Carlos I of Spain). He married Jacqueline de Luxembourg, daughter of the Lord of Fiennes, and Marie de Barleimont.

It was this Count who hosted the orphan Johanna Maria van der Gheynst, future lover of Emperor Charles V and mother of Margaret of Parma, in his house in Audenarde (Oudenaarde).

He had several children, including Charles II of Lalaing (1506-1558), second Count of Lalaing. Baron de Montigny, Waurin and Condé, Lord of Escornaix, Bracle St-Aubin, Wasseières, etc., Knight of the Golden Fleece, Seneschal of Flanders, Governor of Utrecht, Holland and Zeeland, Deputy of the Duchy of Luxembourg and then Hainaut and the Cambresado. He married first with Marguerite de Croy (several children, but only one survived) and, in second nuptials, with Marie van Hoorn-Montmorency, Mme de Condé, with several children. Of his sons are the following two counts of Lalaing: Emmanuel-Philibert (or François) and Philippe.
