Episcope (Christianity)

For homonymous articles, see episcope. This article is a sketch of Christianity.

An episcope (from the Greek Eπίσκοπος / episkopos, "overseer") was, in the first Greek Christian communities, after the disappearance of the apostles, the head of the community responsible for ensuring the cohesion and fidelity of the doctrine of it. It is therefore neither more nor less than the term which designates a bishop. The Latin translation is episcopus.

The word has given the adjective "episcopal" still used today in the Catholic Church, which we find in the expression episcopal consecration for example. Related Articleschange the code
