Inside and Out

Inside and Out (Inside and Out) is a Genesis song, published on the EP Spot the Pigeon of 1977. Like "Match of the Day" and "Pigeons", the other two songs which compose this EP, "Inside and Out" was recorded during the recording sessions of the album Wind & Wuthering, but was left aside and was not part of it.

The song is divided into two parts: the first (Inside) is a slow section that tells the story of a man who becomes increasingly difficult to reincorporate himself into society after being released from prison, while the second part (Outside) consists of an instrumental section with modular moog and guitar solos.

This instrumental section has a vivid sound, reminiscent of material from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway album. There is no recapitulation afterwards of the first part, so the song really seems to be split in two, in a similar way to the instrumental ones "Unquiet Slumbers for the Sleepers ... In That Quiet Earth", also of the album "Wind & Wuthering. " "Inside and Out" is definitely the best song of the EP, and unlike "Match of the Day" and "Pigeons", has a sound more in line with the album "Wind & Wuthering". The other two songs are totally pop, while "Inside and Out" has the same progressive sound with which the band was characterized by their previous works.

In addition to being published on the EP "Spot the Pigeon", the song was also released on the French single "Pigeons" (May 1977) and later with the American single "Follow You Follow Me" the EP had not been released there. It was performed live quite often in 1977, at the end of the Wind & amp; Wuthering. These interpretations were intended to promote the EP. Then the studio version was included in the album Genesis Archive 2: 1976-1992.
