Luc Soete


Luc Soete and Jimmy Wales (2015) Luc Soete (Brussels, 1950) is a Belgian economist, Professor of International Economic Relations at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Maastricht University and director of UNU-MERIT, a joint research institute at the University of the Nations United Nations (UNU) and the University of Maastricht. Luc Soete is also a member of the Dutch scientific advisory body Adviesraad voor wetenschap en Technologie (AWT).

Luc Soete studied general economics and development economics at the University of Gant and began his career as a researcher in the Department of Economics at the University of Antwerp. In 1978 he obtained his doctorate in economics from the University of Sussex.

He worked for the Institute for Development Studies and the Scientific Policy Research Unit (SPRU), both at the University of Sussex, and in the Department of Economics at Stanford University. In 1986 he became professor at the Rijksuniversiteit Limburg (now the University of Maastricht), in Maastricht, Netherlands, where he founded the Maastricht Institute of Economic Research on Innovation and Technology (MERIT) in 1988. In 2006 it merged with MERIT, the UNU Institute of New Technologies (UNU-INTECH), which had been founded in 1990.
