William W. Rice


William Whitney Rice (March 7, 1826 - March 1, 1896) was a representative of the state of Massachusetts in the United States House of Representatives.

Born in Deerfield, Massachusetts, Rice attended Gorham Academy in Maine and graduated from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, in 1846.

He served as preceptor of the Leicester Academy, Massachusetts, from 1847 to 1851 before studying Law in Worcester. In 1858 he was appointed Worcester County insolvency judge and served as mayor of the city of Worcester in 1860. He served as District Attorney for the Mid-Massachusetts District from 1869 to 1874 and was a member of the House of Representatives of State in 1875.

Rice was elected Republican at the 45th Congress of the United States and at four successive congresses (March 4, 1877 - March 3, 1887). After an unsuccessful re-election attempt in 1886, he returned to Worcester and resumed the practice of law. He died there on March 1, 1896, at the age of 69, and was buried in the rural cemetery.
