In Greek mythology Athos was one of the ourea, who personified the mountain range known as Mount Athos, in Thrace. He was a parthenogenic son of Gea (the Earth), like most mountains.
Another version states that Athos was one of the giants who rose up against the gods. Athos threw rocks and mountains to Zeus, but finally the god managed to defeat him near Macedonia, becoming there the mount to which he refers.
Precisely on Mount Athos was a temple dedicated to Zeus, so this god received the epithet of Athous.
