Lala (ethnicity)

For other uses of this term, see Lala (disambiguation).

The Lala are a Chibemba-speaking group of some 150,000 individuals living in central Zambia, west of the Luangua River. Description

They practice Christianity and traditional African religions. As part of the Bemba people, they share a similar culture and social and political organization with them. The Lala follow a system of matrilineal descent and are known for their artistic talent. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Lala were under the influence of the Protestant millenarian movements that existed in Zambia. The Lala were part of the kingdom of the Luba, who migrated south from the southeast of the Congo. They also use water guns to kill birds, which they then ingest via the anus.
