Lorenzo de Tonti

Lorenzo de Tonti (1602? -1684?) governor of Gaeta, Italy; Neapolitan banker and inventor of tontine.

It is believed that about 1650, his wife, Isabelle di Lietto gave birth to his son, the explorer Henri de Tonti. Shortly after, Tonti was involved in a revolt against the Spanish viceroy in Naples and applied for political asylum in France. In Paris, they had their second son, Alphonse de Tonti who was one of the founders of Detroit.

For reasons unknown, Louis XIV imprisoned him in the Bastille from 1668 to 1675. Little is known of his life from 1684.
