Singjay

Singjaying is a form of Jamaican vocal singing typical of reggae that combines toasting with singing through which the singer achieves a whole series of nuances and embelllecemiento both at the rhythmic level and the vocal texture in the songs. / p>

The fusion of singing with toasting occurred in the beginnings of reggae. Musicians such as Big Youth performed this fusion on topics such as "Sky Juice", "Every Nigger Is A Star" and "Hit The Road Jack". It should be noted that the term "singjay" does not really apply to the deejays who went on to sing, but actually to the singers who went to deejaying. Among the first artists to perform what would later be known as singjaying is Michael Rose, who was in the habit of integrating very rhythmic but completely meaningless scats in their roots reggae tracks.

When the rhythm of reggae changed towards the end of the 1970s and became what is now known as "rockers", it also changed the theme. The classic themes of the roots were being changed by songs inspired by life in dancehall. This change also affected the shape of the vowels. Artists like Barrington Levy, Echo Minott and Little John represent this new style of singjay, or "singjay rockers." By the mid-1980s, singjay style became the dominant form of vowels in Jamaican music. Tenor Saw, Eek-A-Mouse, Anthony Red Rose, King Kong, Pinchers, Wayne Smith, Courtney Melody, Conroy Smith, Lilly Melody, Sanchez, Wayne Palmer, Thriller U, Eccleton Jarrett, Nitty Gritty and Yami Bolo are all original singjays .
