Stephenville (Canada)


Stephenville is a town in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador and has 6,623 residents (2016). The area is 35,69 km².

Stephenville is located on the west coast of Newfoundland Island. The place is a Southwest Regional Services Center with shops, education, banks and a small hospital.

In Stephenville, from 1941 to 1966, the Ernest Harmon Air Force Base Air Base was located, a base of the United States Air Force. The site was subsequently converted to the Stephenville International Airport, but today it is only used light for general aviation. An exception was the commitment after September 11, 2001, when Operation Yellow Ribbon took passengers from eight transatlantic scheduled flights, 3,000 in total, for one week after the closure of Canadian and American airspace.
