For homonymous articles, see Havre (disambiguation).

A harbor is a natural coastal port more or less closed and providing a safe shelter for boats at anchor regardless of sea and wind conditions. The metaphorical sense of shelter is more common today (a "haven of peace").

From the days of the sailing navy, the main havens have given rise to ports of commerce, such as Le Havre de Grâce or New Haven. Etymology change the code

Havre comes from the Dutch medium haven which means "port" (as well as its Danish counterparts havn and German Hafen). The figurative meaning of shelter is also found in the English haven, "refuge", of the same origin. One can also consider an origin in the "Norse", or old "Noroi", whose word "hamn" (Sweden) or "hamna" (Shetlands) has the same meaning; bring closer to "harbor"; the root would then be "ha".
