Mohamed Ould Cheikhna


Mohamed Ould Cheikhna (Aioun, 1965) is a military man and politician from Mauritania.

Ould Cheikhna obtained a baccalaureate in the 1983-1984 academic year, going on to the Normal Superior School, although in 1985 he abandoned his studies to join the Military School of Atar (EMIA), in the north of the country. He obtained the highest score in the same, joining the Faculty of Law of the University of Nouakchott where he graduated in international relations.

In his military career, he was promoted to Lieutenant in 1989 and surveyor in EMIA. In 1992 he joined the offices of the General Staff of the Armed Forces in the capital, in tasks of management and planning of troops, where he was promoted to Captain in 1993. Since 2000 he held command tasks in the General Staff.

He participated in the frustrated coup d'état against then-President Maaouya Ould Taya in June 2003, and then went into exile in Burkina Faso, returning to Mauritania after the amnesty after the coup d'état in 2005.

He participated in the presidential elections in Mauritania in 2007, where he only won 1.92% of the votes in the first round.
