Paraguayan census of 1799

The Paraguayan Census of 1799, was made by order of the Governor Intendant Lazaro de Rivera y Espinosa, the first to be promoted by an official authority of this territory, even though Paraguay was one of the Intendencias del Virreinato del Río de la Silver under Spanish rule. The data from this census showed a total population of 108,070 inhabitants, of whom 89,597 lived within the Province and 18,743 lived in the Guaraní villages. On the other hand, these data also included the population of the current Argentine Missions.

The data of this census were found and analyzed by the historian Ernesto Maedel, who also compared some data of estimated censuses between 1680 and 1799. According to the study of this period the population of the province had increased by 21%. < / p> Bibliography
