Rodolfo Stavenhagen


Rodolfo Stavenhagen (Mexico City, 1932 - Cuernavaca, November 5, 2016) was a Mexican sociologist. Since 2001 he was special rapporteur for indigenous peoples at the United Nations. Rodolfo Stavenhagen

Stavenhagen is a family of German-Jewish descent. He studied social anthropology at the National School of Anthropology and History (ENAH) and Sociology at the Sorbonne. Since 1965 he was a professor and researcher at the Colmex College, dealing with ethnic issues in Latin America. From 1979 to 1981 he was Deputy Director of Social Sciences within UNESCO. In 2001, he was appointed as Special Rapporteur by Resolution 2001/57. He passed away at the age of 84.
