First Veterinary Blood Bank Netherlands

The First Veterinary Blood Bank Netherlands (EVBN) is based in Nijverdal, Netherlands, and is engaged in the removal, processing and distribution of blood from dogs and cats. It was established in 2003 by the veterinarians Rob Gerritsen and Cris van der Meiden. The blood bank provides veterinary surgeons from the Netherlands and Belgium with the blood they need to give blood transfusions to sick animals. Dogs

For bloodshed, the EVBN mainly uses large to medium-sized, peaceful dogs. For example, breeds like: Newfoundlander, Labrador, Golden Retriever, Irish Wolfhound, Sheepdog, Bouvier, Rottweiler and the like, but also crosses are suitable as donors. The requirements for a donor are:

For every decrease, the dog gets a physical examination, only healthy dogs can donate blood. The donor should of course not be affected by a decline, and the recipient must not get sick of the blood he receives.

Healthy dogs do not suffer from the decrease and fill within a few days the blood drained again. The donors are called 4 to 6 times a year and release approximately 450 ml of blood at a time.
