Life and work

Gerard Prent received his art education in Amsterdam at the Rietveld Academy (1973-1978) and the Rijksacademie (1978-1980). His first works consisted of large vividly colored faces, often contained in varying frameworks. From the beginning, a love for large square sizes appears, which remains a constant in his work.

In the 1980s and 1990s, he often performed monumental assignments for the government building department, such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1985) and the penitentiary institutions in Zwolle (1994) and Heerhugowaard (1995). His work evolved in anecdotal direction in which different media blended and painting became increasingly in the background.

After trying to turn his art off and settle abroad, he recreated the pleasure of painting by the simplicity of his subject choice and focusing on the transparency of his color use. The mus acted as a moving everyday subject in the middle of the canvas, with the painting experience taking place in the background. Thus, a large series of "sparrows" has emerged that have found their way to admirers and collectors (including HKH Princess Beatrix).

The use of simple subjects has remained: since 2004 he depicts the simple place in the garden, or along the road, large set up with exuberant colors and shapes. According to Gerard Prent, his subject does not matter and it is about the visual, to create pure visual art. Prices Sources
