Lawa River

The Lawa River (also called Aoua) is a river that forms part of the border between Suriname and French Guyana.

The sources of Lawa are the rivers Litani and Marouini. In Stoelmanseiland, Lawa and Tapanahoni converge on the Maroni.

In the middle area of the course of Lawa there are numerous gold mines. In 1902 the governor of Paramaribo decided to build the Lawaspoorweg from Paramaribo to the gold fields. Only the first section of the railroad was built as the production of the gold deposits was not what was expected.
